The ownership rate of bank accounts is almost 100% for Japanese adults.

This is the highest number in developed countries.

So when you study abroad in Japan, it is inconvenient if you do not have a bank account.

There are a wide variety of usage scenarios such as transfer of apartment rent and deposits.

However, there are legal issues for foreigners to open a bank account.

As a general rule, those who plan to stay in Japan for less than 90 days cannot open a bank account.

Also, those who have stayed for less than 6 months cannot open a bank account.

However, there are subtle differences depending on the branch, so it is worth trying.

Unlike overseas, there is no account maintenance fee in Japan, so if you can make one, make sure to make one.

Banks where foreigners can easily open an account

Japan Post Bank

Japan Post Bank is the easiest for foreigners to open an account.

Even those who stay for less than 6 months can open an account with only the deposit function.

It’s worth opening by itself as you don’t have to keep a lot of money in cash.

After 6 months, you can switch to a regular account and use it for rent deductions and remittances.

Sumishin SBI Net Bank

Another thing I would like to recommend is SBI Sumishin Net Bank.

Most Japanese banks use the three major mega banks, Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and Mizuho Bank.

However, nowadays, more and more people are using online banks.

What are the benefits of online banking?

• Transfer fee can be free and cheap
• ATM fees can be free and cheap
• Deposit interest rates are set higher
• You can trade 24 hours a day
• Save time without having to go to the counter

Since online banks do not have stores, all costs can be reduced.

The cost of the user is reduced accordingly.

So, like me, I use Mizuho Bank and SBI Sumishin Net Bank.

By using them properly, you can save money by eliminating unnecessary expenses.
